A New Wave of Terror Sweeps Israel

Just weeks away from the UN’s third World Conference against Racism (Durban III) and the Palestinians’ attempt at UN recognition of Palestinian statehood, a wave of deadly terror attacks and rocket fire swept Israel over the past two weeks, disturbing the area’s relative calm.

The latest round of violence began August 18, as a series of coordinated terror attacks claimed the lives of nine people along Israel’s southern border with Egypt.  The attacks were perpetrated by Palestinian terrorists who infiltrated the Sinai from the Gaza Strip via smuggling tunnels and reached an area of Israel’s border protected only by a wire fence. According to IDF officials, the ultimate goal of the attack was to kidnap an Israeli soldier.

Directly following the wave of murderous terrorist attacks, a barrage of rockets and mortars was fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip.  Since August 18, nearly 100 projectiles have been fired at Israel, hitting areas including Be’er Sheva, Ashdod, and Ashkelon and claiming the life of one while injuring at least 20 others.

Israel’s border with Egypt has remained largely peaceful over the past thirty years with the signing of a peace treaty between the two states. However, since the fall of Mubarak’s government this past spring, Egypt reopened the border between Gaza and Egypt (Rafah Border Crossing) after a four-year blockade, causing an increase in the smuggling of weapons into Gaza and granting terrorists greater access to Israel’s border.

Not more than 10 days following the terror attacks in southern Israel, a Palestinian man carried out another attack in Tel Aviv in the early hours of August 29, leaving eight wounded. Upon driving into a police road block with a stolen taxi, the perpetrator then proceeded to viciously stab Israeli civilians standing outside a popular nightclub. According to the police, the assailant planned to carry out the attack within the nightclub where over 2000 teenagers were present for an end-of-summer party.

Despite on-going Palestinian terror attacks and rocket fire committed against Israeli civilians, the State of Israel is perpetually portrayed as the aggressor and the constant target of unfounded condemnation (Film Clip: Hamas Terrorist Tactics). A leading voice in the condemnation of Israel, the United Nations will be launching its third World Conference against Racism (Durban III) in NYC next month. Although originally established to address issues of racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance, the conference has become a mere guise to delegitimize the State of Israel and promulgate anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist propaganda.

JIJ along with a coalition of now over 30 organizations will be holding a large-scale pro-Israel demonstration during the conference in an attempt to counteract the hypocrisy and the onslaught of continuous delegitimization of Israel.  In light of the latest Palestinian attacks on Israel and the world’s continual indifference to these violations, the demonstration becomes even more vital in imploring the UN to desist from perpetuating anti-Semitism and anti-Israel rhetoric while actually addressing racial discrimination and intolerance.

The demonstration will be held on September 21, 2011 at 12:00PM opposite the UN headquarters in the Dag Hammershald Plaza in New York City. We want to invite you to consider partnering with us financially and helping us to further mobilize support for Israel.  We encourage you to sign the petition to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, forward to friends, and join us at our demonstration in NYC to counter the hypocrisy and expose the truth. We cannot do it without you.
